| Description
| - The main topic of the research proposal is to study the ecology of coleopteran parasitoids (Coleoptera), particularly interactions with their hosts. Parasitoidism is a rare life history strategy in Coleoptera, so far known for only a few species of ca. 10 families. The genus Brachinus, bombardier beetles (Carabidae), will be the model group. Larvae of the bombardier beetles are ectoparasitoids of beetle pupae of Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae and Hydrophilidae. The existence of parasitoidisms of European Brachinus species on pupae of other carabid genus Amara (Carabidae) was discovered by the applicants. This research proposal aims to study the following aspects of host-parasitoid interactions: host range of two species of bombardier beetles (B. explodens, B. crepitans), oviposition stimuli, and the effect of the physiological characters (size, age) on parasiotid behaviour (host acceptance, host preference) and physiology (conversion efficacy, development rate, mortality).
