Description
  • The goal of this project is the reconstruction of subsistence patterns (e.g., manipulative behavior, locomotion) and social processes (e.g., changes of gender roles) in human populations of Eneolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age based on the biomechanical analysis of cross-sectional geometry of long bones. The goal has two aspects. First, we will analyze the diachronic trend of the biomechanical parameters of cross-sectional geometry of long bones from the Eneolithic to the Iron Age. Second, we will focus on the impact of non-behavioral factors (e.g., impact of pelvic morphology) on length of long bones and cross-sectional distribution of the cortical tissue of long bones. The biomechanical analysis will include humeri, femora, and tibiae of 280 new individuals and 192 individuals who were already partially analyzed. Cross-sections will be obtained through non-invasive computer tomography. Biomechanical parameters will be calculated from digitized CT images. The results of this project will be published in mainstream journals and presented at international conferences. We believe that these results will contribute to the bioarchaeological reconstructions of life of prehistoric populations in Central Europe. (en)
