Description
| - Platinum group elements (PGE) belongs to the toxic elements entering natural waters, soils, sediments and food chain and hence there is need to study their behaviour in environment. Worldwide estimate of automobile catalytic converters emissions is of 1,4 t of Pt per year. Mobilisation of PGE from particulates from automobile converters depends on their composition and chemical composition of interacting solutes especially pH, Cl and S activity. Within proposed project following research objectives were designed: 1. Phase and chemical characterization of PGE-containing particles using basic mineralogical and geochemical methods. 2. Determination of dissolution rate of PGE-containing particles from new and aged AC from diesel and gasoline engines, PGE-rich tunnel dusts and standard references materials with PGE contents (e.g., BCR 723 - tunnel dust) using laboratory batch leaching experiments in deionised water and simulated soil water (with low-molecular-weight organic acids, humic and fulvic acids). 3. Elucidation of dissolution mechanisms of PGE-rich particles in various soil types (developed under beech and spruce forests) using the %22in situ%22 experiments with testing bags inserted in soil horizons. 4. Determination of vertical mobility of PGE in soil and peat environment from %22in situ%22 observation supported by calculation of weathering rates. (en)
