Description
| - During the first 300,000 years of the Oligocene, Antarctica has been largely ice-covered which is traditionally explained by the tectonic rifting of Australia and South America from Antarctica and the initiation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current which had climatically isolated Antarctica. The large mammalian turnover in Europe, known as the 'Grande Coupure', is also explained by the Antarctic glaciation. However, new mathematical models suggest that a similar change in ocean circulation would warm, rather than cool, the Northern hemisphere. New evidences show that other more global causes as declining levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide could be drivers for climatic and biotic changes in both hemispheres on the Eocene-Oligocene transition. New palaeoclimatic methods will be employed to asses the other global impact (changes in concentration of CO2) for elucidation of this event based on reconstruction of the fossil flora and entomofauna. The aim of the present project is to complete this picture of climatic changes in the Northern Hemisphere by new data of parallel research and re-evaluation of fossil record. (en)
