| Description
| - The Act on Chemical Substances of the Czech Republic gives limits for the primary biological degradability of anionic and nonionic surfactants but not for cationic and ampholyte ones. The European Parliament approved the regulation 648/2004, coming into force in October 2005, which extends the requirements also to the evaluation of biodegradability of cationic and ampholyte surfactants. It can therefore be assumed that the current version of the CR Act on Chemical Substances will have to be modified accordingly. Moreover, the EU regulation presumes that surfactant biodegradability will have to be tested also under anaerobic conditions. Attention will be paid particularly to cationic surfactants based on quarternary ammonia salts, which are realatively toxic and are strongly absorbed to environmental solid phase components (soils, water treatment sludges, sediments). The dependence of length impact and the number of substituents on reactivity with disulfine blue will be studied. The dependence of biodegradability on their chemical structure will be explored and only those that meet the limits of the given legislature will be admitted as acceptable. The degree of their biological contamination will be determined by the so-called head-space method, the current experience with which in the Czech Republic is as yet lacking.. (en)
