Description
  • The present rapid advent of bioinformatics has been producing enormous volumes of system biology knowledge bases which, if combined with empirical high-throughput data, may unveil novel biologically significant hypotheses. The sheer volume of the now existing knowledge bases prohibits any human researcher from taking them fully into account when forming a hypothesis. Algorithmic knowledge discovery enabled by machine learning systems seem to be a perfect candidate to take up this challenge, but currently these systems are not able to process the kinds of knowledge forms developed by bioinformaticians. In this project we propose to bridge this urgent gap by developing algorithms able to discover knowledge patterns from process networks, such as metabolic, gene-regulatory or cell signaling pathways, which represent the prevailing and most actionable knowledge form of current bioinformatics bases.
