Aim of this project is to obtain and intensify new knowledge on affinity (mode of occurrence) of trace elements to organic matter of coal that has not been studied a lot so far. The result of the study will be the proposal of new mathematic model for the calculation of affinities of all the elements contained in coal (I). New results obtained during the study of quantitative phase composition of inorganic matter (crystalline and amorphous) in coal and ashes will lead to the proposal of three analytical methods, based on new principles (II). The quantitatively well-determined affinity of elements in coal and the content of crystalline and amorphous phases in coal and ashes and other parameters will be used for the study of mutual relations between these parameters and amount of elements leached from ashes and slags (III) and the volatility of elements and their compounds at coal combustion or carbonisation (goal IV). Among other results of this project there will be the critical evaluation of generally used sequential extraction method for the determination of elements affinity (III). In stage (IV) the volatility of selected elements (e.g. Hg, Se, Cl and others) will be studied also in relation to their affinity that will be modified by addition of compounds with inorganically (e.g. NaCl) or organically (e.g. PVC) bound chlorine to coal sample.
