Description
  • Sewer network defects cause underground and surface water pollution, often leading to significant environmental accidents. The objective of this grant project is to formulate fundamental principles for designing, operating, and in particular reconstructing existing sewer system structures on the basis of a detailed analysis of the issue. It is important to realize with the proposed project that all hydraulic changes to date have only been simulated using a (mathematical) model but not verified either by laboratory physical modeling or by in-situ measurements including TV inspection. The effects of every defect type will then be quantified using three-dimensional flow simulation and by a physical model in a laboratory. In order to verify the results, the overall hydraulic roughness of selected sewer network sections will be determined based on the dispersion of added trace substances. In order to identify key effects that reduce sewer system hydraulic reliability, a sensitivity analysis will be performed of the affecting factors. The expected outcome will be our ability to predict changes of sewer system hydraulic capacity.  A methodology will be prepared for designing and reconstructing sewer structures in terms of their hydraulic, structural, and potentially environmental impacts. The project results will be used by sewer network operators and owners to minimize operating expenses, improve the environment, and enhance the quality of service for customers. (en)
