Description
  • The main aim of the proposed project is to investigate the potential for improving both data quality and the validity of applying rock mass classification and monitoring methodology in order to reduce potential environmental impacts and to improve the safety and sustainability of underground gas storage including that of CO2. Rock mass classification systems are widely used for the evaluation of the stability of underground engineered structures. It is also believed that such systems have great potential in terms of the prediction of gas conductivity, a subject which, to date, has not been fully explored. In this project the applicant would like to focus on Norwegian classification systems as they include several decisive parameters, such as discontinuities, which are highly relevant to rock mass gas conductivity. In order to verify the outcome of theoretical studies, it is planned that several in situ tests will be performed. For this purpose the Josef UEF facility provides an excellent %22testing ground%22 due to its already established infrastructure (electrical power supply etc. installed in the former mine) and variable geological conditions including a variable discontinuity system which is clearly essential for the determination of rock gas conductivity. In addition, research carried out at the Josef facility takes place in a necessarily confined and isolated environment which, nevertheless, is still easily accessible for scientific and research personnel. The results of this project will improve the safety and reduce the environmental impacts of underground gas storage and will also have important implications for the safety of a future deep geological repository for nuclear waste.
