Description
| - In the last four years, Beyond GDP indicators have rapidly risen up the political agenda and enjoyed greater public awareness. High profile initiatives have included nef’s Happy Planet Index, launched in 2006, the EU’s Beyond GDP initiative – starting with the Beyond GDP conference in 2007, the OECD’s Measuring the Progress of Societies project, and in 2009, the publication of the recommendations of the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress, led by economists Joseph Stiglitz, Amartya Sen & Jean Fittousi. Despite a growing number of critiques of GDP, and the emergence of an impressive array of alternatives, GDP maintains a central place amongst policy makers, planning offices, media and other target groups. Some data on what may be considered Beyond GDP indicators are being collected by official statistics offices, but they appear not to be considered in policy-making, or are given a peripheral role. This project sees this problem as one of a mismatch between demand and supply and wants to solve this via action research and brokerage activities. Brokerage for Beyond GDP is strcutured as follows: WP1 serves to establish a structured overview of Beyond GDP Indicators. In parallel to WP1, WP2 will establish in a first instance - on the basis of past research and complementary face-to-face interviews - the knowledge-base with regard to the user and demand context of Beyond GDP Indicators within EU-institutions. In a second instance, WP2 will actively engage with selected key user groups through-out Europe in small workshops in order to fine-tune understanding of the differentiation of the demand side for alternative indicators. We have action research in WP3 on practical cases and brokerage in WP4. We complete the project structure by a WP5 on conclusions and consolidation, a WP6 on In-build evaluation, WP7 on Networking and Dissemination and a WP8 for Project management. (en)
