Description
  • In a broad range of industries such as mechanical engineering, the aerospace industry, the wind industry, the building industry, safety engineering and testing, forces with nominal values in excess of 15 MN are measured. This has led to an increasing demand for traceable calibrations in the MN range for forces up to 30 MN in European industry. There are already indications that the upper force range will need to be increased to 50 MN. In Europe, force testing machines with capacities higher than 30 MN are already in existence, such as the testing machine at MPA Braunschweig which generates forces up to 33 MN. For European Industry, there is a need for higher forces for mechanical structures manufactured for the Asian market, which require traceable testing in this higher range which Europe is currently unable to fulfil. Only NIST can currently provide traceability (in the USA) in a higher range (up to a capacity of 54 MN) with their largest calibration machine. A European traceability chain for forces up to 50 MN is required. This will be achieved by PTB’s 50 MN Build up System (BUS) which will be part of this JRP.
