Description
  • The cultivated pea contains only fraction of the genetic diversity present in its wild relatives. Genetic improvement of many crop plants has benefited from the incorporation of traits from related wild species and other exotic germplasm sources. The challenges now are to reintroduce diversity into bred material, traits that have been lost including disease and resistance genes. Development of backcross recombinant inbred lines containing chromosome segments of wild pea (Pisum fulvum, P. elatius and/or P. abyssinicum) genome in cultivated pea (Pisum sativum) genetic background defined by molecular markers will make the use of alien genomes more precise and efficient. The emphasis will be given to cross with Pisum fulvum parent, as this represent the widest cross possible. Owing to our current knowledge of two model legumes genomes, reinforced with prooved existence of syntheny and colinearity, together with large set of pea specific mapped markers, we have in hands sufficient molecular tools to reac (en)
