Description
  • Most highly loaded machine parts, such as rolling bearings, gears and cams are operated under mixed lubrication when the film thickness is about the same as the height of surface asperities. Under these conditions, there are significant changes in film thickness and contact pressure that can result in the surface damage. The project is aimed at the determination of the influence of the shape and layout of surface features on lubrication film formation and on contact pressure, which is critical for designing of machine parts and for safety check in terms of pitting and scuffing. Changes in film thickness will be monitored by thin film colorimetric interferometry using original test rig, which enables measuring very thin lubricant film. Pressure fields within contact will be reconstructed using new numerical convolution algorithm from measured film thickness. It will enable to consider the conditions causing the film thickness rapture and friction surface damage. Results will be important for surface texturing approach used in order to decrease friction and wear. (en)
