Description
  • The principal goal of the submitted project is to describe and understand the rise and the collapse of early mediaeval complex societies in East Central Europe in terms of settlement structures and the system of land use. Due to this shall be compared two local communities in the south and in the north of the western Slavonic settlement territory: one from the basin of the Notte river near Mittenwalde in Brandenburg province (Germany) and other one from the basin of lower Dyje river near Breclav in Moravia (Czech Republic). Within the project the special attention will be given to the land use, as the human modification of natural environment into built environment such as fields, pastures, and settlements, and to the development of settlement structures, especially in term of the hierarchization of settlements (the emergence of central places), the relationship between central places and the periphery and the changes in the inner structure of settlements (the emergence of plots and farmsteads, subdivision of land, the impact of the social differentiation on the settlement pattern). (cs)
