| Description
| - Environmental changes, due to both natural phenomena and human activities, have strong influence on the incidence, proliferation, and emergence of diseases. Emerging infectious diseases have been considered for decades to be a particular problem of tropical and subtropical areas. Growing attention is given recently to spreading of emerging and re-emerging diseases into higher latitudes of Europe. Distribution areas of diseases like a canine babesiosis have expanded recently closely to the Czech frontiers. We intend to use Babesia canis as model example to predict possible trends in spreading diseases into new areas. Current limits of B. canis range in Central Europe will be studied along defined transect by examination of dogs and ticks, using direct microscopic detection of parasites in blood stream, further employing molecular genetic tools (PCR-RFLP, sequencing) and serological methods (IFAT, ELISA). Evaluation of prospective risk and predictability of further spreading of B. canis into new areas, including the Czech Republic, represents the main object of the proposed project. (en)
