Description
  • Etylene-vinyl trimethoxysilane copolymer (EVS) is a polyethelene-like polymer containing small amount of vinyl trimethoxysilane compound incorporated into the macromolecules by radical copolymerization or by grafting. In contrast to common polyethylene, EVS copolymer is capable to crosslink under moisture due to incorporated vinyl silane compounds. This is the reason, why the crosslinked polyethylene is used for more exacting applications such as hot water pipes, heat-resistant packaging, cable and wire insulations and so on. Crosslinking of EVS copolymer proceeds through two steps, hydrolysis and condensation of silanol groups, thus this process can be easily followed by infrared spectroscopy. Since creation of crosslink between macromolecules causes increase of molecular weight and decrease mobility of molecules, it is obvious that creation of crosslinks must have a significant impact on morphology of copolymer and on overall thermal behavior. Depending on crosslinking and/or ageing temperature, the morphology is influenced in different ways because crosslinking reactions proceed mostly in amorphous region and thus there are the differences between processes in molten or solid state. Ageing and crosslinking of commercially available EVS copolymer in water bath was investigated. Part of copolymer was blended with catalyst masterbatch containing antioxidant and second part without of this catalyst masterbatch. Analytical methods such as infrared spectroscopy, thermal fractionation by differential scanning calorimetry and standard tensile tests were utilized for determination of changes during crosslinking and ageing. It was found that two parallel processes influence the final properties of the water crosslinked, semicrystallic EVS copolymer: (1) crosslinking reactions and (2) improvement of crystalline order.
