Description
  • Resistances of civil engineering structures are primarily dependent on material properties, geometry and uncertainties associated to an applied resistance model. While materials and geometry can be relatively well described, the resistance model uncertainty is not yet well understood. The present contribution proposes a general concept of the model uncertainty. Factors affecting results obtained by tests and models and influences of actual structural conditions are overviewed. In a numerical study statistical characteristics of the uncertainties in resistance of reinforced concrete members are then provided. Simple engineering formulas (beam models, section-oriented approaches) as well as complex numerical models are considered. To facilitate practical applications the partial factors for the model uncertainties are derived using a semi-probabilistic approach.
