Description
  • The dynamic response of a footbridge depends namely on the natural frequencies of the structure in vertical but also in horizontal and in torsion. If any of frequencies in vertical is in the range of 1.6-2.4 Hz, the dynamic response from moving people can be significant. In that case it is necessary to calculate the vibrations considering both serviceability and ultimate limit states. If any of the frequencies in horizontal or in torsion are in the range of 0.8-1.2 Hz, pedestrians can also force the footbridge to vibrate. The problem of vibrating footbridges was so urgent that the just elaborated european codes (Eurocodes) newly involve the dynamic load models of a single pedestrian, of a group of pedestrians and of a continuous stream of pedestrians. Also the serviceability criteria are covered in informative annexes.
