Description
  • Background: Hospitals regularly deal with the issue of purchasing medical equipment. In the last twenty years there has been great scientific and technological development that brought a large number of new medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and technologies. This development has undoubtedly led to improvements in health care and quality of life of patients, but is accompanied by a steady increase in costs that are exceeding limited financial resources of health care facilities. As a solution to this problem, we proposed a methodology supporting the selection of appropriate health technology in medical facilities (HTAi 2012 Annual Meeting, Gac Sanit.2012; 26: 251). This methodology was applied to the selection of patient monitors in the intensive care unit. Methods and Conclusions: Based on conducted market analysis and the selected criteria, a shortlist of patient monitors was chosen and made ready for further application of selected methods of HTA and value engineering. In the first part of this study, various parameters of patient monitors are evaluated using the paired comparison method, and multi-criteria analysis, particularly the WSA. For assessment of the devices in terms of their costs and benefits, the CMA, CEA and CCA methods were chosen. Operating and maintenance costs of selected patient monitors within three years, their failure rate and cost effectiveness were primarily compared. Moreover, the selected monitors were compared also from the perspective of future users based on a questionnaire survey carried out between the staff of several intensive care units.
