Description	This paper analyses profitability of short-haul and long-haul flights operated by selected European airlines using cost functions developed by Swan & Adler and by methodology estimating airline’s annual per-flight earnings from publicly available data developed by Horák. The fundamental question was how do short-haul flights stand when compared with long-haul flights in terms of profitability? It appears that mostly just the long-haul flights are efficient for the airlines to operate. We combined profitability analysis with analysis of the Hub and Spoke system. Including the Hub and Spoke into the analysis, we were able to confirm that complexity of the airline business allows operation of short-haul flights even if they are ineffective from purely economic point of view. However, it is questionable, if such arrangement is sustainable in connection with airport and airspace congestions, strong competition from the low-cost airlines and emergence of the high-speed rail systems.
