Description	We summarize how the archival photographic plates can be used for a study of the long-term activity of various types of X-ray binaries in the optical band. We show examples of the unpredictable phenomena (flares, outbursts, transitions between the states) which are easily recognizable on the plates. Such plates are very helpful in extending the investigated time intervals into the past, especially because some of these systems underwent dramatic changes of their activity during the last decades, sometimes even before they were discovered as the variable objects and/or the X-ray sources.
