  • Power quality during recent years has achieved an increasing interest. The concept of power quality includes the quality of the supplying voltage with respect to interruptions, voltage dips, harmonics and flicker. Large industrial load, such as electrical arc furnace is a source of high disturbances in the feeding AC system. The electrical arc furnace produces high harmonics and is a source of voltage flicker. This leads to power quality problems in the place where the load is connected. To limit the effects of these disturbing loads, compensation devices have usually to be connected. To improve power quality in the place of electrical arc furnace FACTS devices could be used. Statcom shows the best performance in this situation. Statcom is a system based on AC/DC converter technology and controls reactive power in the place where it is connected. Reactive power compensation for voltage control is limited. To improve power quality further active power source shall be added to the Statcom. This allows to compensate not only voltage drop caused by reactive power consumption but also part caused by active power. This paper describes a model of Statcom with active power compensation. The model is used for voltage flicker mitigation caused by electrical arc furnace. Improvement in flicker mitigation and voltage control is shown. The choice of the active power source is a critical aspect in this kind of system. Possible candidates for active power source are evaluated.
