  • Parkinson's disease is a slowly progressive disease of nervous system which affects over 8 million people worldwide. By the time of PD diagnosis, 60% of nerve cells in the substantia nigra are degenerated and 80% of dopamine is depleted in the striatum. Early diagnosis has a vital role in improving patients' lives and will be crucial when treatment became feasible. Therefore, there is an urgent need for reliable and cost-effective methods to detect PD in its early phases as well as monitor treatment efficacy and disease progression and to differentiate it from other diseases. In addition to the main motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, resting tremor, and postural instability, it is estimated that up to 90% of patients with PD develop hypokinetic dysarthria in the course of their illness. This alteration of speech may also be one of the earliest indicators of the disease. The most prominent signs of parkinsonian speech relate to phonatory, articulatory, and prosodic deviations and are characterized by abnormal voice quality, articulatory imprecision, reduced variability of pitch and loudness, variable rate, and disfluent speech behaviour. The purpose of this seminar is to present the acoustical methods that are likely to yield a powerful way to detect early signs of PD, and to characterize and monitor the disease as it progresses or in response to treatment.
