Description
  • This paper describes Cloud Gunther, a web application designed to run parallel (w/message passing) and pseudoparallel computations on IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) clouds with an Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) compatible API. The system was developed on the experimental Eucalyptus private cloud installed at the Dept. of Cybernetics. The cloud runs on lab workstations and lets researchers utilize their spare computing power. Cloud Gunther itself eases the exploitation of this power by providing a web user interface and queuing capabilities, effectively creating a PaaS (Platform as a Service) for batch computations on the raw IaaS system. We tested the program on several real workloads from other researchers and it proved to be usable. The ease of use and versatility of the underlying infrastructure seem to rival existing grid systems, although admittedly the queuing logic still needs some work.
