Description
| - The study of biologically controlled mineralization represents an essential issue of modern science. Molluscan nacre (mother-of-pearl) is one of the most studied nanocomposite materials. Here, we use a combination of nanoindentation and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to test if the crystallographic texture of nacre controls its mechanical properties. The aims of the present study are as follows: (1) to determinate the hardness (H) and reduced elastic modulus (Er) in both textural types of bivalve nacre; and (2) to test if the shape of a diamond Berkovich probe influences the measured H and Er values, in the case of a strongly anisotropic material.
