  • This chapter summarizes our experience of studying the behaviour of bone cells in cultures on various carbon allotropes, such as nanocomposite hydrocarbon plasma polymer films (ppCH), amorphous carbon, pyrolytic graphite, nanocrystalline diamond films (NCD), fullerene layers and carbon nanotube-based substrates. Some of these allotropes were combined with metal of metalloid ions, namely ppCH films with various concentrations of Ti or Ag, amorphous carbon and fullerenes with Ti, and NCD were doped with boron. In general, all these substrates, including those containing silver up to a concentration of 3 atomic %, provided a good support for the adhesion, subsequent growth, viability, enzymatic activity and osteogenic differentiation of human osteoblast-like MG 63 cells and/or vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells, i.e. other important cell types present in the bone.
