Description
  • In mechanics of fluids, shear stress is one of the most important characteristics of a flow pattern. The device makes use of a precisely defined gap between two coaxial cylinders for calibrating a heated shear stress probe. The inner cylinder rotates at a known angular velocity. The probe is aligned with the interior wall of the outer, immobile cylinder. The shear stress profile in the gap is calculated from Navier-Stokes equations and compared with the anemometer reading to determine the calibration constants. The device allows for temperature readings with a 0.1°C accuracy and thus thermal calibration of the probe. The cylinder diameter is 50 mm; the active cylinder height is 250 mm. The device can be used with a wide range of liquids. Used in the domain of laminar flow. One advantage is the enclosed system with a small quantity of liquid used.
