Description
  • Studding the nature forms of biological materials in order to design their artificial supports and replacements is coming more and more into scientific interest. Because of hierarchical organized structure of tissues, it is needed to investigate them in micro- and nano-levels. Many experimental techniques for micro-mechanical studies has been developed recently. We concern with tissue employed in intervertebral articulation of lumbar motion segment. Previous efforts to design the intervertebral disc replacement pointed out the difficulties in interface between the tissues with different material properties. Those tissues are porous visco-elastic annulus fibrosus and elastic material in vertebral body with the end plate in vertebral apophysial region. We use nanoindentation technique for the material identification of those tissues and their micro regions. Indentation results are supported with structural studies done by light or polarized light microscopy and fluorescent microscopy.

(cs)
