  • A kinetic analysis of the sintering process in an illite-based ceramic body is studied under non-isothermal conditions using thermodilatometry. Kissinger’s method and non-linear model-fitting method was adopted to provide a deeper insight into the mechanisms of this sintering. We show that it becomes rapid at the temperature ~900 °C and occurs in several overlapping steps. The apparent activation energy of the sintering process determined by the non-linear model-fitting method is 818.71 ± 0.09 and 865.32 ± 0.14 kJ/mol for the first and second step, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism of sintering and/or crystallization seems to be heating-rate independent and governed by the thickening of the flat illitic particles.
