Description
  • The present paper describes a two-step homogenization method for the evaluation of the effective elastic properties of plain weave textile reinforced polysiloxane matrix based composites. Basalt and carbon reinforcements are considered. The material data acquired from nanoindentation are utilized together with X-ray microtomography and standard image analysis in the construction of a suitable computational model properly accounting for the volume fraction, shape and distribution of major porosity. In this regard, both the so-called statistically equivalent periodic unit cell and computational model built directly from the available Micro-CT scans are adopted. To avoid difficulties associated with meshing relatively complex geometries, the popular extended finite element method is adopted to provide estimates of the effective elastic properties. These are finally compared with the results found experimentally exploiting the non-destructive measurements of ultrasonic wave speed.
