  • Preferential flow and air entrapment effects were studied by means of recurrent ponded infiltration experiment on small undisturbed heterogeneous soil column. Innovative use of two non-invasive visualization methods (nuclear magnetic resonance and computed tomography) provided excellent dataset for detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of these effects. In our study, the information from CT imaging was used to simulate transient water flow in three-dimensional heterogeneous porous system. The spatial variability of the hydraulic conductivity was introduced by simple scaling technique coupled with Kozeny-Carman formula. The results of simulations were compared with the data from the infiltration experiment and signal intensities from magnetic resonance imaging.
