Description
  • This paper describes results from grid nanoindentation on two types of structural materials. Namely, cement paste and alkali-activated fly ash. These materials exhibit high degree of heterogeneity even at the microscale. Material parameters of individual phases are extracted from property histograms by means of statistical deconvolution method. Normal distributions for individual phases are determined and compared with independent results from image analysis. Good correlation of volume fractions of individual phases was achieved for cement paste. Results from image analysis of alkali-activated fly-ash indicate that mechanical properties are not directly linked to the grey levels in ESEM images for all phases. It shows on exceptional capabilities of nanoindentation method in the determination of mechanical properties of individual phases.
