Description
  • This paper deals with one of the successive steps towards the understanding of general behavior of cement paste composites. This approach utilizes assessment of both elastic and inelastic micromechanical properties of cement paste. Since the overall mechanical and physical properties of composites depend on their microstructure such assessment is a stepping stone towards the prediction of the overall composite properties based on the knowledge of the intrinsic microstructural behavior. Nanoindentation and atomic force microscope (AFM) are employed to establish these properties. Nanoindentation is the only experimental technique that enables direct measuring of mechanical response of individual material phases at micrometer or nanometer scales. AFM can be used for precise three-dimensional scanning of surface deformations with nanometer resolution.
