Description
  • The St. Vitus Cathedral is a part of the cultural heritage of Czech nation. Tendency to preserve this great building leads to the monitoring and analysis of load-bearing structure of the Cathedral. By the numerical model of the bearing system was simulated the distribution of temperatures in the structure. This distribution of temperatures was the input to do the stress analysis of the structure. Bearing system of the Cathedral is periodically strained by the temperature effects which can cause the origin of the fatigue cracks. This thermal strain of the structure is caused by the statically indeterminate supporting of the structure and unequal thermal gradient in particular parts of the structure. Stress caused by the statically indeterminate supporting of the structure which causes tensile stress appears more dangerous in light of durability of the structure.
