Description
  • This study examines the potential of a method for the evaluation of precipitation extremity. The method enables to quantify and compare the extremity of events of various areal extent and duration. It takes into account the exposure of the affected area to precipitation totals using their return periods interpolated into a regular grid and the areal extent and duration of precipitation optimized by considering variable time periods and the stepwise enlarged area. The method is tested by applying to three heavy precipitation events that occurred in the Czech Republic, namely to non-convective rainfalls, a mesoscale convective system and isolated but severe convection. The highest extremity is assessed for the non-convective event characterized by the largest areal extent and 4-day duration. The results of the study confirm the applicability of the method, which opens the door, for example, for the objective selection of extreme precipitation events and for the interpretation of their temporal and spatial distribution on the basis of the distribution of typical circulation conditions.
