Description
| - SmMnO3 infrared transmission in the 2000-8000 cm-1 range was studied as a function of temperature. We observed several infrared-active Sm3+ crystal field transitions between the lowest 6H5/2 ground-state level and the 6H9/2, 6H11/2, 6H13/2, and 6H15/2 excited levels. The splitting of the ground-state Kramers doublet of the Sm3+ ion below TN 60 K varies from 3.8 up to 5.8 cm-1 at 2K. This reflects strengthenings of the Mn3+ - Mn3+ and Mn3+ - Sm3+ magnetic interactions. In order to monitor the antiferromagnetic transition, the frequency softening of the most intense Raman-active B2g stretching mode ( 607 cm-1) below TN was also measured.
