Description	The monograph includes the biographies and scientific contributions of 46 scholars of Jewish origin from Bohemia and Moravia, who became victims of the Nazi regime in 1938/39-45. The book is opened by an introductory study of the editors.The kinds of death which befell persons included can be divided in three categories: execution by the Nazi authorities (one case); death in direct consequence of imprisonment in the ghetto, a prison, or murder in concentration or extermination camp (the great majority of cases); suicide (relatively frequent, in 7 out of 46 persons included here, i.e., 15% of cases). In order to present a representative selection of Bohemian and Moravian scholars the editors have adopted among other these criteria: long-term professional activity in Bohemia or Moravia; professional affiliation) in sciences and humanities taught at contemporary universities in Czechoslovakia; attainment of a certain degree of excellence in a relevant field of science (all professors and Dozents, and more six persons with extraordinary publishing results).
