  • The paper is focused on the types of metonymical relationships found in Czech toponymy. Ten types of metonymy are distinguished here: (1) metonymy based on a relationship between a neighbouring object and the object referred to by the name; (2) a %22part%22 – %22whole%22 relationship (synecdoche): the object is named according to another object found within its boundaries; (3) reversed synecdoche: the object is named according to its location within the boundaries of some larger object; (4) time-based relationship – toponyms reflect the existence of some extinct object once existing in the place of the current object; (5) names referring to the owner of the object; (6) relationship %22people%22 – %22place where the people live%22; (7) %22circumstance%22 – %22object connected with the circumstance%22 relationship; (8) names denoting certain material extracted in the named locality; (9) %22tool%22 – %22result of the use of the tool%22 relationship; %22motion%22 – %22object affected by the motion%22 relationship.
