Description	This article reviews the current knowledge on the retroviral pathogenesis during long-term infections and compares that caused by avian, rodent and primate viruses. The importance of heterologous system of mammalian cells infected with avian sarcoma and leukosis virus complex for comparative studies is highlighted.
