Description
  • Shortly after mid-16th century, the Emperor Ferdinand I actively supported the construction of a choir loft and a new organ for the most important church in Bohemian kingdom, the St Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. This fact is documented in extensive written sources. The court architect Bonifaz Wohlmut was not only the author of this monumental choir loft but also of the music balcony in another royal building in Prague, the %22most beautiful Renaissance transalpine building%22, the Summer Palace (Belvedere) in the Royal Garden of the Prague Castle. Thus architecture appears in an entirely new context of royal representation where music plays a substantially greater role than before. The paper also informs about the newly discovered contemporary drawings of the Renaissance organ for St Vitus Cathedral that has been destroyed by fire in 1757. (en)
