Description	The focus of this talk is on changes in U.S. universities-especially public universities-over the past two decades. Since the late 1980s, there has been increasing pressure on government and other public institutions to reorganize themselves to operate like businesses. These pressures have been heightened by government fiscal crises that have diminished funding for public education since the 1980s. Universities are increasingly pressured to behave as entrepreneurs and this has had significant consequences for students, faculty, staff, and we would argue, for the larger society. As a workplace, the university has become a more profit-oriented, high pressure and extended work-day environment. We argue that these pressure lead to conflicts between pressures for individualistic entrepreneurialism and the needs for team work and collective-oriented service functions.
