Description
(cs)
  • Entodiniomorphid ciliates present in the colon of wild apes tend to disappear from captive apes with the exception of Troglodytella abrassarti. We used fecal examinations to screen the gorillas in 3 Zoos to establish the ape-to-ape T. abrassarti transmission pattern. Gorillas from 2 European Zoos are positive for T. abrassarti while gorillas from the Australian Zoo are negative. We documented a horizontal transmission of T.abrassarti to a negative adult gorilla introduced into Troglodytella-positive group in Prague Zoo and traced the origin of the ciliate infection to the Paington Zoo using serial fecal examinations. 2 infant gorillas born in Prague Zoo became first positive for T. abrassarti at the age of 9 month. Ciliate morphology and the sequencing of SSU rRNA gene and ITS rDNA spacer region revealed that T. abrassarti affects both captive gorillas and chimpanzees. We conclude that Zoo transports play a major role in the distribution of T. abrassarti in captive gorillas.
