| - The re-emergence of West Nile fever (WNF) in Europe has probably been caused by a whole complex of ecological (abiotic and biotic) factors, especially by simultaneous presence in a specific geographic area of: 1) favourable weather conditions (temperature, humidity, and their appropriate annual distribution); 2) abundant competent mosquito vectors (Culex pipiens pipiens, Cx. modestus, Mansonia richiardii), which requires the presence of favourable habitats; 3) infected (viraemic) migrating birds; 4) abundant competent (amplifying, viraemic) local avian hosts; 5) abundant competent bridge vectors (Culex pipiens molestus, Aedes spp., etc.) able to feed on both birds and mammals; 6) susceptible population of equines and/or humans (as 'dead-end' or occasional vertebrate hosts). Obviously, there is a need to start a surveillance programme for WNF targeted at least for selected countries of the European Region, and to address many research questions that have been mentioned.

- Znovuobjevení západonilské horečky v Evropě bylo pravděpodobně vyvoláno komplexem ekologických (abiotických i biotických) faktorů. Především ve specifické oblasti souběžným výskytem: 1) pro cirkulaci viru v ekosystému příznivých povětrnostních podmínek (teplota, vlhkost, a jejich vhodné sezónní rozdělení); 2) početných kompetentních komářích vektorů tohoto viru (Culex pipiens pipiens, Cx. modestus, Mansonia richiardii) včetně pro ně vhodných biotopů; 3) infikovaných (viremických) tažných ptáků; 4) početných kompetentních (amplifikaci viru umožňujících, tj. viremických) místních ptačích hostitelů; 5) početných kompetentních tangenciálních („bridge“) vektorů (Culex pipiens molestus, Aedes spp., atd.) schopných sání jak na ptácích tak i na savcích; 6) vnímavých populací koní anebo člověka (jako slepých článků řetězce, případně příležitostných hostitelů viru).
