Description
  • We studied food availability and preferences of semi-habituated chimpanzee population on Rubondo Island. The population results from an introduction over 30 years ago. We measured the availability of potential chimpanzee foods using monthly monitoring of leaf and flower stage and fruit presence on trees and lianas along transects. We assessed tree and liana biomass within smaller plots, to compare this with estimates of food availability. We studied chimpanzee food preferences across months using direct observations and fecal analyses. Lianas were a main source of fruit across transects, especially during dry season. Overall 38.7% of chimpanzee foods were lianas or climbing shrubs. Three of the five most frequently consumed foods were liana fruits. We suggest that liana food sources may have contributed to the self-sustaining nature of introduced chimpanzees. We will explore how distribution of lianas on the island explains the atypically large ranging areas of these chimpanzees.

Potravní preference během jednotlivých měsíců byly zjišťovány pomocí přímých pozorování a analýz trusu. Liány byly hlavním zdrojem ovoce na transektech, a to hlavně během období sucha. Plody lián a popínavých keřů tvořily celkem 38,7% potravních zdrojů konzumovaných šimpanzi. Tři z pěti položek, které šimpanzi konzumují nejčastěji, byly liány. Přepokládáme, že dostupnost plodů lián konzumovaných šimpanzi napomohla k úspěšné introdukci šimpanzů. (cs)
