Description	Chromosomal data on 109 common shrews from 15 sites in West Siberia are reported. When this new information is combined with previous data (generating a total of 51 sites) it can be seen that the distributions of the Novosibirsk and Tomsk chromosome races are separated by altitude. The Tomsk race occurs in the highlands while the Novosibirsk race is found in the lowlands. A relatively narrow contact zone between the races runs at about 200 metres above sea level. We demonstrate that the polymorphism for qr is intimately associated with this hybrid zone, and that previous division of the Tomsk race into the 'Tomsk' and 'Altai' races is no longer justified. Ecological and historical causes that might determine the altitudinal differentiation of the Novosibirsk and Tomsk chromosome races are discussed.
