Description
  • In terms of its historical significance and scientific potential, the settlement complex of Mikulčice-Kopčany is one of the most important localities of Great Moravia. The “Slavic stronghold at Mikulčice archaeological monument as a fortified core of the settlement complex is authentic proof of how the princely (ruler’s) residence looked in the 9th century. The research carried out here may resolve archaeological and historical questions at other Great Moravian localities that are inaccessible. The first stage of research (large-scale excavations 1954–1992) resulted in fieldwork covering an area of 5 hectares and a huge collection of finds. The second stage, the systematic processing of these finds, began in 1993, focusing first of all on the individual categories of finds and was followed by the third stage, a comprehensive assessment of the field documentation. This third stage of research, which started in 2004, includes new fieldwork (a program of processing sources and verifying old research). The research priorities changed after the tragic fire at the archaeological base in 2007. The aim is no longer “systematic processing, but an intensive search for solutions to key archaeological and historical questions relating to the Mikulčice stronghold. The general revitalisation and reconstruction of the site has been underway since 2008. Unlike the archaeologists who strive to preserve every square metre of the archaeological terrain, the current monument management is acting contrary to the authenticity and integrity of this archaeological monument.
