| - The turbulent years of the late 4th and the early 5th centuries, the Roman establishment was confronted with the first wave of migrations from the East. The settling of foreign ethnic and cultural elements in the Danubian provinces disturbed the traditional life style and resulted in the formation of a mixed romano-barbarian culture. The new culture is represented both in the late Antique settlement along the Roman frontier and the so-called foederati graves, single burials of the highest social level, notably of Untersiebenbrunn type. Their equipment, golden objects which can be understood as insignia of an elevated social status and other costume accessories or components of ostentatious dress with connections to East Mediterranean tratidions, formed an elite culture during the first half of the 5th century. The bearers of this culture may be assotiated with barbarian communities who settled within and just north of the Panonian provinces, where in their role as allies they formed part of the Roman defensive system on the Norican-Panonian frontier. The Untersiebenbrunn stylistic group also comprises a series of less lavishly furnished graves which are novelty for the area north of the Danube and can be attributed to the alien elements from the Danube region. The book makes an attempt to define the relations between this newcomers and the Suebian autochthons north to the Danube in the first third of the 5th century. (en)
- Die bewegten Jahren des 4. und des frühen 5. Jahrhunderts wurde die römische Welt konfrontiert mit der ersten Welle der Völkerbewegungen vom Osten her. Die Ansiedlung von fremden ethnischen und kulturellen Elementen in donauländischen Provinzen hat die bisherigen traditionellen Lebensformen gestört, infolgedessen hat sich allmählich eine römisch-germanische Mischkultur formiert. Sie ist sowohl in den spätantiken Siedlungen und Befestigungen entlang der römischen Grenze, als auch in den sog. „Foederatengräbern“, nämlich meistens isolierten Einzelgräber repräsentiert vom Typ Untersiebenbrunn, in denen die damaligen gesellschaftlichen Eliten beigesetzt haben. Die prunkhafte Ausstattung, goldene Gegenstände, die als Insignien des sozial gehobenen gesellschaftlichen Stratum zu verstehen sind, prunkvolle Trachtbestandteile etc., die Zusammenhänge mit den östlich-mediterranen Traditionen aufweisen, bilden eine Elitenkultur der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jh.s. Träger dieser Erscheinungen können mit den barbarischen Gruppen in Verbindung gebracht werden, welche in den Provinzen bzw. in ihrem barbarischen Vorfeld zugesiedelt wurden und hier als römische Verbündeten in römischen Grenzverteidigung eine Rolle gespielt haben. Ähnliche, jedoch nur bescheidener ausgestatteten Gräber nördlich der Donau können den fremden, aus den Provinzen durchgedrungenen Gruppen zugeschrieben werden. Das Buch versucht die Beziehungen dieses fremden Elementes und suebischen Autochthonen nördlich der Donau während des ersten Drittel des 5. Jh.s. zu bestimmen und erklären.
