Description
  • Societal frustrations were analyzed from the point of view of hierarchy of needs theory (Maslow, Alderfer), the frustration-aggression theory (Dollard et al.), psychology of systemic frustration (Feierabend, Gurr), and the post-totalitarian syndrome (Klicperova-Baker). A representative sample of the Czech Republic (1093 respondents aged 15-69 years, 52% women) was surveyed by an original Societal Frustrations (SoFr) questionnaire with 32 items in 6 blocks, and a 6-point response scale (1 representing non-existent and 6 an extreme frustration). The survey was administered twice, once with respect to the authoritarian Communist regime (before 1989) and then referring to the current (2008) democratic but post-communist conditions. Results indicate a considerable social dissatisfaction both with the past (raw score 3.70) and with the present time (3.77). The past was generally most frustrating by obstacles to self-realization; among most upsetting were also “restrictions of travel (rated at 4.78), “lack of some goods (4.75), and “the dictate of foreign power (4.64). The most aggravating in the present condition are “lies and corruption in politics (5.35) among societal items, “rudeness and envy (4.80) from social relations, “social insecurity (5.12) in basic needs and “fear of environmental damage (4.34) from the survival bloc. Results are discussed in the context of psychology of totalitarianism and psychology of democracy.
