Description	Academic mobbing has only recently been recognized as a widespread and painful, yet often unadmitted dark side of higher education. This paper draws on the first large-scale study on academic mobbing in the Czech Republic. Based on narrative interviews with academics and PhD students who became targets of mobbing, the paper explores different strategies employed by the targeted individuals to resist mobbing and the impact that these strategies have on their identity. It is argued that active resistance, despite its many risks, plays a crucial role in diminishing negative impact of mobbing which are otherwise long-term and severe. The critical role of agency as a source of empowerment is discussed.
