Description
  • Changes in the distribution of methylcytosine residues along a transgene locus of tobacco in relation to the type of gene silencing were studied in parental plant leaves, calli, and regenerated plants derived thereof. With an increasing number of cell cycles DNA methylation changes gradually - methylation is introduced into the promoter and promoter become inactivated in cultured cells. Methylation pattern alteration is connected with the change of the type of transgene silencing, from posttranscriptional to transcriptional. The newly established epigenetic patterns are stably transmitted from calli into regenerated plants and their progeny.
